The medical term for the embarrassing physical feature jokingly referred to as “man boobs” is gynecomastia. Long having plagued overweight boys, puberty-ridden adolescents, and self-conscious beachgoers, gynecomastia does not weight discriminate. In fact, men who are on the slimmer side have been reported to have the condition as well. Gynecomastia occurs when there is a hormonal imbalance between estrogen and testosterone. Other factors may also come into play, such as underlying illnesses and prescription drugs, and consulting with a medical professional first is important to ruling out the more serious medical conditions that gynecomastia may bring to light. Some men turn to male breast reduction surgery to deal with gynecomastia, but this option is often unnecessary and should only be used as a last resort.
